HOW TO MANAGE BEING BUSY

Being busy is a way of life for a lot of us. We are constantly moving from work, to school, to social commitments, and everything in between. Things often gets out of control and we burn out and suffer in so many other ways. We may not always be able to take a break or ease our workload, but we can change the way we handle busyness so it doesn’t take such a toll in our lives.

Here are three ways to manage being busy:

1. Develop a routine and stick to it Not only does a routine give you stability, it also makes your days more productive and encourages you to build healthy habits. A routine will transform you from merely being busy to being efficient in your tasks. Think about how you currently structure your time and begin to prioritize your tasks. Remember, a routine doesn’t have to be restrictive – it is totally okay to leave room for spontaneity.

Tip: Use a daily habit tracker like the streaks app which helps you build good habits in a fun and engaging way.

2. Stay organized Organizational skills are critical to being successful, and they keep you from feeling stressed out or overwhelmed. When your work, school, and home life are organized, your mind is more at ease. Use tools such as calendars and to-do lists to keep track of tasks, due dates, and social engagements. When you know exactly what you need to do, and when – you can relax and be sure you are not forgetting anything important.

Tip: Don’t just use a calendar to keep track of due dates. Also use it to plan for when you will complete tasks.

3. Leave time for self-care For many of us, self-care can often feel unattainable and time-consuming. Yet, despite what we see on social media, self-care doesn’t always have to be a big task like a bubble bath or a spa day. Self-care can consist of the simple pleasures and little blessings that you enjoy and that restore you. These small pleasures often add up to make a big difference. You can start by listening to music, taking a moment to savour your morning coffee or tea, or asking for help when you're overwhelmed.

Tip: Our busy culture may make us feel inadequate when we are not working, but there is no need to feel guilty about doing nothing.

Bio

My name is Chisanga.

I'm a blog writer for Black Women Connect Vancouver and a communications professional working in the not-for-profit sector. I was born in Zambia and immigrated to Canada at a young age. I have lived in 4 cities, two countries and travelled to a dozen more. In my spare time, I enjoy watching reality TV, reading up on the latest wellness trends, and exploring beauty, and travel.

I have always been connected to my roots and identity as a Black woman, and naturally, it's what led me to join BWCV. Black women need to have a safe space where we can unapologetically thrive and exist. So often, Black women are not allowed to be complex. Instead, we are often only valued for our strength and resilience. BWCV creates a space where we can be soft and vulnerable. To be a Black woman is magical, and we have so much to offer the world. It's essential for us to unite and learn from one another.

As a blog writer, I want to leverage my skills and talents to work towards a common good with a group of women who share my values. It's refreshing to have a platform that enables me to communicate from my heart and contribute to this collective. Thriving and existing as a Black woman is revolutionary, and I'm glad we can take up space.  Fun Facts: I am a reality TV enthusiast who enjoys wellness, beauty, and travel.
